Yarn Tasting Swap

Page history last edited by gale zucker 14 years, 3 months ago

A 30 minute session to swap small tastes of yarn ( like half a skein, around 40 yards, flexible  more or less, you don't have to measure it!!)*  with others. It's a great way to try yarns you've never experienced, or accumulate interesting bits if you like doing pieced projects, stripes  or knit/crochet embellishments.

How to join:

Bring several mini-skeins of yarn. You will take home an equal amount of "tastes" as the number you bring! You can bring more than one of the same yarn.

Please label every mini-skein you bring. Write downas much as you know about the yarn, including fiber content, yarn company, colorway, weight, suggested needles etc.  Handspun welcome too, of course.

This will only go if we know in advance that enough people are interested to make it worth the effort of sorting through your stash and winding off the yardages.

I'm filled this in as happening from 3-3:30 on Saturday but if that makes a conflict for anyone who wants to play, we could do it later during the last time slots. Let me know.

So.....comment if you're in!

PS This isn't a destash, someone else can organize that.

* I originally said 40 yards , which was kind of random,  I received some notes wondering about the amount. I am thinking of half or partial skeins, the swap police will not arrest you or even issue a tcket if you have some that are 25 yards and some that are 58. It's just for fun.

PLEASE leave a comment if you are thinking of participating.

I love the idea of this, but 40 yards seems like a big mouthful! The sample skeins from Elann, for example, are 10 yards and allow a reasonably-sized swatch. Gale, would you mind commenting on the rationale behind this length? Any chance of bringing it down?

Hi Suzanne,
I was thinking of an amount that was like half a skein, or a third of a skein. More than a teeny sample , I personally hate those, all you can do is a gauge swatch, and then you have nothing to play with after. I figured that many people, like me , have leftover partial skeins they may want to swap.
Anyone else have thoughts? Other amounts?

Hi Gale,
Thanks for the reply - I have a better idea of how you think about this. I didn't mean to suggest bringing the amount all the way down to 10 yards; I toyed with the idea of suggesting 25 yards in my initial comment. Reading your reply, I realized how attached I am to my partial skeins! I use them for sideways seed stitch scarves, which end up looking like a weave.
