SUGGESTIONS FOR FIBERCAMP 2014

Information/Communication

     Before FiberCamp

  • Provide a PDF (half sheet, non-bleed brochure, or both) to attendees/CCFG members to help us publicize.
  • Give info on overnight parking, parking in general.
  • Give emergency contact number for day of (e.g., if teaching, but running late, etc.)
  • Add page on wiki with suggestions for facilitators: set a timer/alarm for end of class, make sure class description tells whether any prep work is required, what materials to bring, what materials will be provided. (Add this info to the big Post-Its on the wall, too.)
  • Suggest that people bring worsted weight and size 7 or 8 needles.
  • Ask swap donors to please label yarn: fiber content at the very least, and whatever other info they have.
  • Send out an email a few days before FiberCamp; remind of stuff like parking, etc.

     At FiberCamp

  • More/better/bigger signage.
  • Map of the rooms.
  • In addition to schedule sheets, add big sheets for people to add session requests and for facilitators to offer sessions and see if there's interest.
  • If session room changes, let people know where the new room is, put sign at old room.
  • Videotape some of the moments or have still photos taken and posted on CC website as one photo is worth a thousand words.

     After FiberCamp

  • Have an evaluation form.

Programming/Content

  • People really seemed to enjoy opening up to more fiber crafts: sewing, weaving, etc.; new creative energy.
  • Add demos, DIY, drop-in help in the registration or hangout spaces.
  • Add more social stuff: Maybe make it more immersive; e.g., have at or near a hotel. Or add option: Saturday evening knitting pub crawl, dinner?
  • Have a keynote speaker? Go back to having the Friday Cod meeting be the kickoff?
  • Have a yarn tasting session. Yarn stores will do it for a nominal charge per person; Windsor Button will do for free.
  • Get someone to tell about sheep shearing, carding, etc.
  • Show and tell or a fashion show? Maybe have it Saturday night, then go out together. "Show Us Your Knits." Maybe a small prize or two.

Scheduling

  • Maybe start later in the day; push it back 1 hour?
  • Maybe start at same time each day; less confusing.
  • Lengthen lunch: 1 hour 15 minutes? 90 minutes?
  • Lengthen gaps between sessions, or at least lengthen the 5-minute gap between half-sessions?
  • Encourage more half sessions? Or make short sessions longer than 30 minutes? Or change all sessions to 45 minutes?
  • List classes/topics in advance, but don't actually schedule anything until FiberCamp?

Rooms/Facilities

  • Have more AV rooms.
  • Concentrate the rooms closer together, limit number of floors.
  • Have a lockable and/or attended space where folks can leave stuff for short periods; e.g., during lunch.
  • Put swap table closer to communal/hangout areas.

Resources, Things to Provide/Make Available

  • The coat rack was a good thing!
  • Keep the childcare option.
  • Bring a ball winder and swift for people to use.
  • Get a tea shop to sponsor tea time and actually provide tea?
  • Ask people to bring snacks, baked goods, etc., and have CCFG just provide coffee, tea, drinks? (If so, list ingredients, bring recipes.)

once you pick a date for next fiber camp, prepare a pdf announcement for members to distribute as advance promotion? Video tape some of the moments or have still photos taken and posted on CC website as one photo is worth a thousand words.

Really had fun. THANK YOU!
Dee

First of all, thank you to all those people who worked so hard to make this weekend possible. I have a couple of thoughts I would like to share. First, half-hour classes aren't really long enough to learn something new or get anything done. In the three half-hour classes I attended, by the time everyone got settled, it was almost time to leave. The one exception was Thrumming which started pretty well on schedule. The 30 minutes allotted for that class was fine. In general, though, based on the three half-hour classes I attended, I think longer would be better. I think someone suggested 45 minutes? That might work out better in my opinion. I would not shorten the hour-long classes, though. In both of the classes I attended, we were all surprised that our time was almost up when we were given the "warning" bell. I found both of those classes very rewarding and came away feeling I had learned a new skill. (My thanks to Beth and Jen.) The other thing that would be helpful is to update the schedule online as soon as there are any changes. That way, you are less likely to miss a session you really want to attend if you are driving in. I realize the logistics of AV equipment, etc. can be incredibly challenging. Perhaps, though, as soon as there is a schedule change, if someone could update the Fiber Camp Boston site, it would be enormously helpful. Thanks again for a great experience.
