Double Knitting Intro with Alasdair Post-Quinn

Double Knitting is a unique method of making a fabric with no "wrong" side and a reversible pattern built in. Significantly different from the standard intarsia and stranded colorwork that is so well known, double knitting is a labor-intensive but wholly worthwhile technique to have in your repertoire. In this class, you'll learn a new 2-color cast-on for double knitting, get comfortable with the techniques involved, then move into colorwork. At the end of the class, you should be well on your way into a small motif swatch and be confident that you can take this technique and incorporate it into other garments.

This is an advanced technique, but you need only be comfortable with the long-tail cast-on and basic knit and purl. Previous experience with colorwork is also helpful.

You'll need two contrasting colors of plain yarn in the DK to worsted weight range, and the proper size straight or circular needles.

To any experienced double-knitters: I am going to try to teach more than my usual number of people in a shorter time than normal. If you would like to attend and be my teaching assistant(s), that would be much appreciated.

How timely! I need to start a double-knit hat for my daughter soon! Why are you focusing on flat knitting? Are there any issues with circular knitting?

Would love to do this session. I'd like to be able to make a really warm hat this winter.

I'm focusing on flat DK because I have an intro workshop I run on a regular basis. 75 minutes is just not enough time to deal with circular DK. I'm glad to talk with you after the workshop about the differences.

Alisdair, I am so excited to be learning this from you! I bought your four winds hat pattern from Twist Collective and can't wait to make it for my husband. Double-knitting is one of the techniques I wanted to learn in 2010. What a great way to start off the year!

I'm only a sort-of experienced double knitter, but I'll plan to show up and lend a hand if this doesn't conflict with other classes I'm signed up for. :)

Alisdair: Both times that you are offering your session, it is opposite other things I am also interested in. Any chance I could persuade you to switch Sunday's session to the afternoon slot that is currently empty? Susan

I am interested! I've done a swatch before, liked it, and would enjoy another foray.

Susan -- OK, I moved it on Sunday. All of this is subject to change later anyway. Thanks for your interest!

Alasdair, Your double knitting FOs are more than amazing.
Thanks so much for sharing your skills and giving me an opportunity to try this technique.
It was really helpful to read your article in Twist Collective and watch the videos to help remember the cast on when I got home.
